The Roxy Regional Theatre Marquee for THOUGHTS OF A COLORED MAN
I needed a couple of days to really gather my thoughts on THOUGHTS OF A COLORED MAN. I have a minor bit of history with this show as it was introduced to me in 2015 by both my college acting professor, Mairzy Yost-Rushton and my college buddy, Brandon Hughley. After reading it, I fell in love with it. But I never gave it a second thought. Flashforward and its on BROADWAY in 2022!

When the rights came out, I knew we at Roxy Regional Theatre had to do it! As a Frostburg Alumni I couldn’t let this opportunity slip by. I wanted us to be the among the first professional regional theatres to do this production! My wonderful boss, Artistic Director Emily Ruck asked me what show you would like the Roxy to do for Season 41 and without hesitation I mentioned this one. I told her about my history with the script and without batting an eye, she said, “Done!”. Emily, thank you for being a champion for The Roxy! Oh, and as luck would have it, the show’s playwright, Keenan Scott II, confirmed that we were the very first professional regional theater to do so.

This show, this cast, everything, was an absolute artistically creative theatrical dream come true. The collaboration with Deontè Warren and Eboné Amos made this production one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had so far with Roxy Regional Theatre.

I was tasked with not only Stage Managing the show, but I had Lights, Sound, and Projections under my belt as well. It was such a daunting task at first, especially since I had two other shows I was designing for as well. The Ruminants at Austin Peay State University where I was the Projection Designer (Thank you, Talon Beeson and Dale Pickard for letting me have some fun with you guys!) and I did the Sound Design for the remount of Rikki Lacewell helmed Shemika Renee’s Ms. Story’s Living History. All opening within week or THE WEEK OF Thoughts of A Colored Man. I know, I’m a glutton for punishment. It reminded me of college all over again and I could just feel Keith Hight smiling pushing me to keep going and not to give up!

The show was incredible, and I will take this show heart and smile whenever I think fondly of it. Thank you to all that came to see it and I hope you enjoyed it. BIG Thank you to my little brother Russell “The ProphaSee” for the transitional music within the show. It added that beat and rhythm in between scenes that really moved the story along. I was so happy to have another family member helping with this.

Also. I got Keenan to sign third draft of the script from 2015! When I showed him, he smiled and laughed and graciously signed it.

Still on cloud nine! To have a Broadway Playwright and fellow Alumni be in the building to see his show, iconic and transformative. Much love, Keenan Scott II!

Since we started YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN rehearsals today, I look back on where I came from to where I’m going, and I’m so glad.

Be Blessed and as always STAY BEAUTIFUL YOU AMAZING CREATURE!

A Review

If nothing else, the performance of Kenneth L. Waters, Jr. make this a must-see experience. Waters portrays Mitch, the “comfort counselor.” Mitch is completing his community service hours by performing this job at the Bee. Waters was so convincing that I first wondered if he was just really this type of character in real life. The major brilliance of the performance by Waters is fully revealed when he also play the one of fathers to one of the characters. Waters transforms from knife-wielding thug to cake-baking nurturer. Waters even further shows his amazing technique and skill when he briefly plays a different character’s father and just as seamlessly transforms into a third, completely different character. Waters demonstrated strong vocals and he has an especially rich and pleasing tone. Overall, one of the best performances that I have seen in local theater." - a review on 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with Tantallon Players from Showbiz Radio
