EPISODE 12 - Little Shop of Horrors

“On The 21st Day in the month of September…..”

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and a book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical is loosely based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors. The music, composed by Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, "Skid Row (Downtown)", "Somewhere That's Green", and "Suddenly, Seymour". The musical premiered Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 before moving to the Orpheum Theatre Off-Broadway, where it had a five-year run. It later received numerous productions in the U.S. and abroad, and a subsequent Broadway production. The musical was also made into a 1986 film of the same name, directed by Frank Oz, starring Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene as Seymour and Audrey.

About The Guest
Stacy Reynolds Oosterink (She/Her) has been a member of Community Theater in Southern Maryland almost as long as there has been Community Theater in Southern Maryland! Taking part both onstage and backstage, she has acted, produced, directed, costumed, and wrangled props for the Port Tobacco Players, The Newtowne Players and the now defunct Patuxent Playhouse. She currently serves on various committees at The Newtowne Players, and is the host for their bi-weekly podcast called “The Green Room.” A “jack of all trades,” she is excited and grateful for the return of live theater after such a long hiatus. Stacy lives on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay in an empty nest with her husband Bill and their furry menagerie. She is grateful for her talented children Ashley, Kylie, Madelyn, and Bradley who have helped fill her life with music and excitement. She is also VERY grateful to Kenny for the opportunity to guest on his fabulous show, and encourages everyone listening to support the arts however possible. Become a member, an audience member or a sponsor, because Community Theater doesn’t exist without the COMMUNITY, and without the arts, the world is a MUCH less beautiful place to be.

A Review

If nothing else, the performance of Kenneth L. Waters, Jr. make this a must-see experience. Waters portrays Mitch, the “comfort counselor.” Mitch is completing his community service hours by performing this job at the Bee. Waters was so convincing that I first wondered if he was just really this type of character in real life. The major brilliance of the performance by Waters is fully revealed when he also play the one of fathers to one of the characters. Waters transforms from knife-wielding thug to cake-baking nurturer. Waters even further shows his amazing technique and skill when he briefly plays a different character’s father and just as seamlessly transforms into a third, completely different character. Waters demonstrated strong vocals and he has an especially rich and pleasing tone. Overall, one of the best performances that I have seen in local theater." - a review on 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with Tantallon Players from Showbiz Radio
